Job Shadow Day - Monday, February 2, 2009

The PTA thanks everyone for making Job Shadow 2009 a success.

"The job shadow experience gave me insightful information on a job that I previously knew almost nothing about." - Annie, Class of 2009

"It was an amazing experience to sit down and talk one on one with the designers and have helpful advice from people who had been through it." - Evelyn, Class of 2008

Job Shadow provides an opportunity for a student to go to a workplace to observe and talk with one or more employees in an occupation in which he/she has expressed an interest. Find out what a typical work day is like. What is it like to be a scientist? What does a graphic artist do? How much schooling does an engineer need?

Attending a job shadow helps a student accomplish the following:

  • Begin to identify possible career interests
  • Observe the daily routine of adult workers
  • Gain an awareness of the academic, technical, and personal skills required by particular jobs
  • Develop and apply communication skills by interacting with and interviewing workers
  • Realize that different jobs are characterized by different work cultures and environments
  • Understand the connection between school, work, and achieving goals

Students can choose from many job listings. Before applying, students should read over the the job shadow fact sheet and application procedure.

Parent Responsibilities:

  • All transportation to and from the Job Shadow host is provided by the student or parent.
  • Parents must report an excused absence to the attendance office for students who are off campus due to Job Shadow on February 2.
